The Board of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), meeting in Durban, South Africa on 7th June 2017 ahead of the 69th World News Media Congress, has called on the South African government to ensure an environment that better protects media freedom and the independence of journalists, notably in the face of proposed legislation that threatens a free press.

As technology holds an increasing importance in media houses around the world, the threats that accompany the digital revolution have become paramount. Journalists in South Africa are working to tackle these threats, with the WAN-IFRA Media Freedom Committee recently hosting a two-day digital security training and panel discussion at the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Journalists, civil society groups and the ruling ANC party have gone head to head with South Africa’s public broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), since May, when the broadcaster announced that it would no longer air footage of the destruction of public property during protests. The ban has caused a public uproar, with many accusing the broadcaster – the country’s largest – of censorship.
